What sort of educational background and/or degrees do designers of modern firearms usually have?
Also, what sort of tools do they use to create the designs? I am into dabbling in engineering and designing machines, guns being one of many interests I have. And how does one go about calling attention to the design from possible investors/buyers/builders?
Well..
The basis is a degree in mechanical engineering. You also need to be a student of firearm design along with mechanical design. You need to develop your drafting skills. It helps to know the two most common software packages used for this type of drafting. Those packages are AutoCad and Solid Works. In especial, learn how to do the 3D solids so that you can assemble your designs in the computer. It also helps to know the practical side of the mechanical world. To that end, work in a machine shop for a period of time.
